Norwegian Air Flies to Stewart International Airport

Orange County Executive Steven M. Neuhaus took part in a historical ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday night to celebrate Norwegian Air’s first scheduled International service from Stewart International Airport in Newburgh. Norwegian now offers transatlantic flights from Stewart Airport to Edinburgh, Scotland. This is the first of five routes the airline will be offering from Stewart, with service to Belfast, Northern Ireland; Dublin and Shannon in Ireland and Bergen, Norway scheduled to begin next month. Norwegian is the world’s sixth largest low-cost airline and carried 30 million passengers in 2016. The airline operates more than 500 routes to 150 destinations in Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, Thailand, the Caribbean and the U.S. Norwegian has a fleet of 130 aircraft, with an average age of 3.6 years, making it one of the world’s youngest fleets.

Stewart Airport will also be home to Norwegian’s newest crew base, its third in the U.S. The airline will station two Boeing 737 MAX aircraft and 30 pilots and flight attendants at Stewart Airport to accommodate the new service being offered, with plans to hire additional crew later this year. As the second-largest employer in the Hudson Valley region, Stewart International Airport employs approximately 2,700 people and generates $450 million in annual economic activity. Norwegian’s new service is expected to result in the creation of an estimated 230 jobs per year, $13 million in total wages and $36 million in overall economic activity.

Neuhaus: “Stewart International Airport is now truly International and I’m proud to have played a role in bringing Norwegian Air to Stewart. Norwegian’s arrival will benefit not only Orange County, but the entire region. This represents a new era of flights at competitive price points and it will establish Stewart Airport as a true International destination for travelers. I want to thank everyone who worked so hard on this truly historic event.”

Orange County Arts Council 10th Anniversary Grants

The Orange County Arts Council is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2017 by creating new Community Arts Grants, designed to encourage new and more abundant arts and culture opportunities in Orange County. Funded through individual donations made to the arts council from donors and sponsors, the Council received 32 submissions for the grants earlier this year. The selection panel awarded grants to 14 projects, representing a variety of arts disciplines throughout the county. The local grant winners are:

The Greenwood Lake Film Strip project: Developed in conjunction with the Hoboken Film Festival, the project consists of 20 wooden “film-strip” cutouts, 2 feet wide by 4 feet high and mounted on stands at local businesses and area attractions in and around Greenwood Lake throughout the film festival.

The Painted Trotters of Goshen: A collaborative effort between the Village of Goshen and the Goshen Art League, individual artists were given a plywood cutout of a horse which the artist painted in any style they choose.

Encapsulate: Encapsulate is a short documentary about the unearthing of a time capsule in the Village of Warwick that has been buried for 50 years.

Treecycle 2017: Wickham Works is producing its second annual Treecyle, a two-day event that coincides with Earth and Arbor Day, and takes place at Wickham Woodlands Manor and Pavilion in Warwick (former Orange County Correctional Facility).

DUSKLIT Interactive Art Bazaar: DUSKLIT is a one-night art bazaar that challenges visitors to accept experience as art. More than 75 artists will transform the Seligmann Homestead in Sugar Loaf into a landscape of interactive 10 x 10’ installations, offering visitors the opportunity to engage with and participate in micro-environments and interdisciplinary performances.

Confabulation: The Notion of a Small Town: A theatrical piece based on real stories garnered from the community as the Village of Warwick celebrated its sesquicentennial.

Milkweed Poetry Journal: The mission of Milkweed Poetry Workshop (MPW) is to create an Orange County-based community of poets and to support and encourage expression in words – written, spoken, and otherwise.
