Orange County News: Stewart Airport & Ireland West Airport Knock Form Strategic Alliance

Ireland West Airport and Stewart International Airport in New York have established the first Sister Airport Relationship, forming a strategic alliance to facilitate the exchange of information and promote and develop air access between the airports.

The sister airport agreement was signed at Stewart Airport in Orange County, New York by Joe Gilmore, Managing Director, Ireland West Airport and Ed Harrison, General Manager, Stewart International Airport. In attendance to witness the historic event, as part of an official trade mission to New York, were Richard Finn, Cathaoirleach, Mayo County Council, Keith Henry, Vice Cathaoirleach, Sligo County Council Ciáran Hayes, CE, Sligo County Council, Peter Hynes, CE, Mayo County Council and Brian O’ Dwyer, International Chairman, Ireland West Airport Knock.

In establishing the first Sister Airport relationship the aim is to develop a cooperative partnership for the purpose of achieving the following:

  • Sharing of market research data relevant to developing air service between the two parties.
  • Collaborate to promote each other’s respective regions as vibrant destinations for business and leisure travel.
  • Developing direct air access between our airports by working on joint marketing presentations to potential air carriers with a goal of increase tourism and economic growth in both regions.

Commenting on the historic occasion, Joe Gilmore, Managing Director, Ireland West Airport, said, “The airport are delighted to have formed a strategic partnership with Stewart International Airport. Stewart is a convenient and economical option for commercial air operations into the State of New York, the Hudson Valley and the New York City Metropolitan Region and is the newest transatlantic gateway from Ireland. The West and North West regions of Ireland have a centuries-old relationship with the people of New York, and their airports provide a modern link between the two regions that share family, business and cultural ties unmatched by other countries.  We look forward to developing this partnership with the aim of developing air access between our airports and enhancing the knowledge and expertise of both parties”.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Ed Harrison, General Manager, Stewart Airport said, “Stewart Airport are looking forward to developing a strategic alliance between our airports and exploring options to deliver direct air access to the West of Ireland and to foster business, economic and tourism links between the West and North West regions of Ireland and Orange County”.

Orange County Airport to Receive $14.5 Million in Federal Funding

Orange County Airport in Montgomery is to receive a federal grant of $14.5 million to improve infrastructure aimed at increasing safety, which will be used to realign the runway to create a runway safety zone and install runway navigational devices.

Funding is being allocated through the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Improvement Program, which provides grants to public agencies for the planning and development of public-use airports included in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems. The funding comes from the Airport and Airway Trust Fund, which is supported by user fees, fuel taxes, and other revenue sources.

The mission of the Orange County Airport is to promote general aviation and foster economic development by strategically planning, developing and operating an effective and efficient airport that meets current and future corporate business and general aviation needs of Orange County, adjacent counties, and nearby portions of the New York City Metropolitan Area.

Orange County Executive Steven M. Neuhaus took part in a historical ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday night to celebrate Norwegian Air’s first scheduled International service from Stewart International Airport in Newburgh. Norwegian now offers transatlantic flights from Stewart Airport to Edinburgh, Scotland. This is the first of five routes the airline will be offering from Stewart, with service to Belfast, Northern Ireland; Dublin and Shannon in Ireland and Bergen, Norway scheduled to begin next month. Norwegian is the world’s sixth largest low-cost airline and carried 30 million passengers in 2016. The airline operates more than 500 routes to 150 destinations in Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, Thailand, the Caribbean and the U.S. Norwegian has a fleet of 130 aircraft, with an average age of 3.6 years, making it one of the world’s youngest fleets.

Stewart Airport will also be home to Norwegian’s newest crew base, its third in the U.S. The airline will station two Boeing 737 MAX aircraft and 30 pilots and flight attendants at Stewart Airport to accommodate the new service being offered, with plans to hire additional crew later this year. As the second-largest employer in the Hudson Valley region, Stewart International Airport employs approximately 2,700 people and generates $450 million in annual economic activity. Norwegian’s new service is expected to result in the creation of an estimated 230 jobs per year, $13 million in total wages and $36 million in overall economic activity.

Neuhaus: “Stewart International Airport is now truly International and I’m proud to have played a role in bringing Norwegian Air to Stewart. Norwegian’s arrival will benefit not only Orange County, but the entire region. This represents a new era of flights at competitive price points and it will establish Stewart Airport as a true International destination for travelers. I want to thank everyone who worked so hard on this truly historic event.”
